Marketing 101

Heavypen for a Content-Hungry World

A freelance content creator who asks better questions.

You don’t often find a freelance content creator who has been writing for the web since 1995—and still keeps up with how people find information today.

I launched my first website in 1995 and Heavypen.com in 1997. I started writing content for search results before I’d heard anyone utter “SEO.” Search optimization was unfamiliar enough that I developed my own metric and called it “Roads to Roam.”

Since then, I’ve followed the trends, trained for current search engine models, and expanded my work to include AI search results. I’m still writing, learning, and asking questions.

I’m Ray Wyman Jr. Here’s where those questions lead.

The right freelancer looks beyond the assignment.

A request for six blog posts raises a few questions. Why six? Who will read them? What should each article accomplish? What can you explain that your competitors haven’t bothered to address?

You should expect a writer to ask those questions—and listen carefully to the answers.

My background spans journalism, public relations, technical writing, and content development. I’ve ghostwritten several nonfiction business books, authored The Art of Jack Kirby, and written uncredited stories for Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

I’m currently writing The Kirby Tapes, a new book chronicling my personal conversations with Jack Kirby between 1989 and 1993. Those conversations continue to reward the time spent asking questions—and listening to the answers.

My clients benefit from the energy I bring to content creation. I can drill through complicated technical material and give readers a clear explanation before they make a decision.

Here’s more about my experience and the work I do.

Know what your audience wants to know.

Demographics give you a starting point. Useful discoveries follow when you learn what people ask, what they misunderstand, and how much they already know.

A first-time buyer needs a different explanation from an experienced customer comparing technical details.

In Content Writing to Move Your Niche Market, I explain how audience knowledge, conversation, and specialization shape the work.

Give each article a job—and somewhere to lead.

Someone arrives with a question. Your article answers it. Then another question follows.

Plan for that. Connect introductory explanations to detailed discussions. Help readers compare approaches, examine a concern, or understand how something works.

My 5-Point Content Silo Plan explores how related articles support a larger content plan.

Find the next useful angle.

Your business holds material worth exploring: customer questions, practical demonstrations, mistakes corrected, unexpected uses, and lessons from completed projects.

The challenge is deciding which details deserve their own story.

Working the Angles of Content Creation explains how I develop different treatments of a subject, each giving readers another reason to visit.

Keep the website working, too.

I also work with current WordPress sites. I’m available for quick sitewide optimization, restoration, and updates for the latest PHP version—including checking older theme code before an upgrade.

If your content needs attention and your website needs maintenance, we can address both.

Tell me what you’re working on.

Do you need articles, a content plan, or help getting an older WordPress site back into shape?

Tell me who you need to reach, what you want to accomplish, and where you’re getting stuck.
