Transformational Leadership


The world is rapidly changing and at a pace that is without precedent. To be successful in today's world, then, organizations must be flexible and this requires flexible people; people who can meet new challenges and can constantly transform their management skills and practices. People whom management consultant Patricia Buhler calls the transformational leader.

Qualities of a Transformational Leader


Transformational leaders transform followers:  They provide a shared vision to work towards.

Transformational leaders influence more than just individuals. They influence entire organizations. The ultimate test of practical leadership is the realization of intended, real change that meets people's enduring needs.

Transformational leaders assist others to meet objectives and focus on change, not through repeated oratory demonstration, but by practical planning and demonstration by doing.

Transformational leaders must have a strong sense of what is to be accomplished.

Transformational leaders keep the vision "on course" and always carry a "roadmap" -- always demonstrating that he or she knows where the organization is and how well it is doing. 

Transformational leaders see the organization as it can be.

Transformational leaders do not accept organizational constraints and challenges status quo.

Transformational leaders persevere. This means being patient and being willing to invest the work necessary over an extended period of time in order to meet the objectives desired.

Transformational leaders forego the short-term quick fix in favor of long-term solutions.

Transformational leaders clearly understand strengths and weaknesses both within him or herself, and those of the organization.

Transformational leaders must possess a true desire to learn.

Transformational leaders truly enjoy the work. Nothing draws other hard working passionate people closer than a labor of love.

Transformational leaders build excitement and enthusiasm..

Transformational leaders treat people with dignity and respect.

Transformational leaders are change agents and dreamers.

Transformational leaders go beyond the boundaries and motivate followers to go beyond what is ordinary.

Transformational leaders do not create dependent followers, but nurture independent thinkers.

Transformational leaders encourage innovation.

Transformational leaders are not afraid of making mistakes because 'failure' is not in their vocabulary.

Transformational leaders supplant self-interests and keep the greater good in mind.

Transformational leaders are permeable.  They raise awareness of the environment both inside and out of the organization.
