A Companion to Rare Coin Collecting
By Ray Wyman, Jr.

Introduction

For many years rare coin collecting has been ranked among the most reliable investments available. Yet, it continues to be regarded by some with a great deal of skepticism.

Thanks to unscrupulous dealers and the flood of telemarketer activity in the late 1980's, the news media has helped paint a murky picture of anything associated with such investments. However, rare coins are actually as safe, or as risky, as any other investment opportunity. They have the same problems and pitfalls that can destroy any investment program, no matter how carefully it is planned. On one hand, rare coins can be a very profitable and rewarding lifetime occupation. On the other, without proper advanced preparation, it can be a nightmare.

The information contained in this document is based on a booklet that the author, Ray Wyman, was hired to produce for a rare coin collector group in Southern California in 1989. It has been updated somewhat, but still offers frank and relevant discussions on the field of collecting rare coins. It covers both the good and bad side of rare coin investing and provides essential insights into how to avoid mistakes that prevent many buyers from realizing their full potential.

Caution to the reader: The accuracy of the information contained herein is subject to opinion and in no way should be considered conclusive. The reader should consult the professional advice from a qualified investment counselor or dealer of rare coins.
